An illustrative example of what an Insurance Settlement Review looks like.

Why check a cash settlement?

Once you take the cash, you may be taking on the repair risk too.

  • A cash settlement is money paid to you instead of the insurer arranging some or all of the repairs.
  • You may then need to find trades, coordinate the works and deal with costs that emerge along the way.
  • A scope of works drives the repair estimate. If relevant work is missing or unclear, the amount can be affected.
  • Insurers may have negotiated supplier rates that an individual homeowner cannot necessarily obtain.

Reported by ASIC

ASIC reported on 31 August 2026 that at least 63% of the home-insurance claims it reviewed included a full or partial cash settlement. It also found that many offers relied on insurer-preferred supplier quotes that may not reflect prices consumers face arranging repairs themselves.

Noted by AFCA

AFCA says a key cash-settlement risk is an inadequate scope of works, and notes insurer-negotiated repair costs may be lower than those available to an individual consumer.

What we check

Four questions we work through in the documents you send.

Is the repair scope complete?

We work through the supplied scope and supporting reports to identify apparent omissions, dependencies, make-good work or items that need clarification.

Do the repair allowances stack up?

We review quantities, labour/material allowances, margins, contingencies and other visible cost assumptions in the documents supplied.

Could there be costs outside the headline repair figure?

We look for visible issues such as demolition, access, temporary works, approvals, project management, GST, storage or other associated repair costs where relevant to the supplied documents.

What should you clarify before accepting?

You receive a plain-English list of the specific questions and document gaps worth raising before you make your decision.

  1. Question 1“Please confirm whether the allowance includes all associated demolition, disposal and make-good work shown in the assessment.”
  2. Question 2“Is the quoted repair amount available for me to action with the contractor at the stated price?”
  3. Question 3“Please identify the contingency, builder/project-management margin and GST included in the settlement calculation.”
